Lady Franks Big Hat Tea
The Purpose of the Big Hat Tea is to bring awareness and support a cause in our community. This fundraiser called on the women of the community to come out and enjoy an afternoon of food and service with the proceeds going towards the community outreach. In classic Baptist Church style, women were asked to wear hats to the event. In retrospect, these women with hats showed that they are a pillar to the community and a strong voice and presence in the Church.
The turnout for the big hat tea was tremendous. There were people from Mocksville and from as far as Virginia that attended. Food was served and the women in attendance were made aware of community the Ashton G. Brown Scholarship.
Ashton Gabrielle Brown was a beautiful young woman and mother with a passion for life. Sadly, this young family was unexpectedly taken from this world on April 18th, 2022. The story is probably familiar to many in our community who knew Ashton Brown and her family.
Ashton's grandmother is a member of our Church and our hearts were broken when we received the News. Aside from personal donations, we wanted to do something as a church to support this scholarship.
Ashton’s parents don’t want the tragedy of what happened on that day in April to be the end of her story. They opened the Ashton G. Brown Memorial Scholarship in 2022 to remember Ashton’s twenty-seventh birthday on November 14th. The scholarship will remember Ashton while helping high school athletes from Davie County High School.
Ashton Brown was a kind soul. She loved sports as a young girl, playing basketball and softball from an early age. She played both sports all four years of high school and went on to play collegiate softball at Shaw University in Raleigh for two seasons before transferring to Winston-Salem State University.
Ashton was a 2014 scholarship recipient of the Davie County Training School – Central Davie High School Reunion Scholarship under the Davie Community Foundation. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in Birth-Kindergarten Education with a minor in Early Intervention.
.The Big hat Tea raised $500.00 to support the Davie Foundation in honor of the Ashton G. Brown Scholarship. Lady Franks and Rev. Saundra James delivered the funds from the fund raiser to the Davie Foundation. They in responded to our gift with a letter of appreciation for the Church.
As we continue this fundraising practice in the future, we will continue to show support for the causes of our community.
1John 3:14 says "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren."
It is this love that leads us to continue to do the works of him who has sent us in our community.
